How to win in Innovation Awards 2012

“All companies have to innovate, are desperate to innovate, but they don’t know how to innovate.”

During yesterday’s SIME Amsterdam 2011 event at the Beurs van Berlage, I had the opportunity as the initiator of the Accenture Innovation Awards to take a look on the state of innovation in the Netherlands in my Masterclass “How to win in Innovation Awards 2012″. In this collaborative event, we discussed a few selected concepts from past winners of the Innovation Awards.

During the 45 minute session, the participants -consisting mainly of brand new start ups and eager to learn how to win the Innovation Awards- were actively involved in the discussion on the criteria to win the Innovation Awards, how to create breakthrough innovations and how to measure innovation, success and potential. When asked who is going to enroll for this year’s edition, a large part of the audience raised its hand and we have already received some extra registrations on the website. Read more…

Core Analyst School: the Accenture Adventure

Accenture’s History: A Bigger Slice of the Pie

Despite the competitive pressure and the tremendous amount of income the consulting practice was generating by the mid-1980s, changes in the marketplace weighed heavily on the group’s decision-making process. But the competition was not the only big concern Andersen was facing at the time.

There was more revenue in the services side, and we saw pressures competitively that caused us to think very differently about our own model.  The influx of giant technology companies onto the consultants’ systems installation turf drove much of the strategy-related soul searching. With the consultants’ mainline business increasingly technology driven, there was great concern internally that the consulting practice lacked a clear identity in the market. Everyone CEO

Last month Dutch strategist, innovator, social media expert and writer Menno Lanting published his fourth book titled “Iedereen CEO“. In this book one of the main things he discusses, with pragmatic writing and real-life examples, are the changes in traditional corporate organizational structures due to the influence and importance of social media and new technology. The core principe of the book is that in this network era everyone is/can be the CEO.

Months ago Lanting contacted me via Twitter to discuss social media at Accenture and my view on the phenomenon. The vivid discussion led to several published pages in his new book, including an excerpt from page 137: Read more…

Hakken Pakken Run 2011

Last Thursday was the 2nd edition of the Hakken/Pakken Run, organized as a ‘warming up’ for the Zuidas Run on May 29th. During the lunch break, like last year, many bankers, consultants, medics, accountants, officials and lawyers were competing against each other on the 50m ‘pinstripe’ on the Gustav Mahlerplein. For the gentleman it was required to wear a suit and carry a briefcase, for the women the (only) requirement was to wear at least 7 cm heels.

Hosted by Jort Kelder and supported by hundreds of colleagues, fans and an army of photographers at the finish, the competitors were competing for the grand price of a €500 voucher made possible by partner Suitsupply. Initiator and organizer of the Hakken/Pakken Run and Zuidas Run, Accenture’s Jochem Vollaard was pleased and satisfied with this year’s edition: Read more…

The 27th edition of Art Amsterdam

As per tradition since 2006, main sponsor Accenture organizes a special reception for its clients, alumni and employees during Art Amsterdam. The event is coordinated with the launch of the Art Amsterdam fair.

Art Amsterdam is a well-known platform for national and international young talent and established names in post-war art. With 133 galleries across Europe, North America and Asia, Art Amsterdam is the largest contemporary and modern art fair in the Netherlands. This year’s 27th edition from May 11th – 15th (at the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre) is the most international in the history of Art Amsterdam and showcases 44 galleries from abroad. Of particular interest this year is the amazing ‘No holds barred’ program: presentations of large scale art works bound to encourage discussion and debate.

No holds Barred

‘No holds barred’ is an American wrestling term from the world of men theatrically slamming each other onto the canvas. Started by Edo Dijksterhuis in 2010, 79 artists -represented by galleries exhibiting at the art fair- have submitted proposals including sculpture, painting, photography, installation, performance and film. No holds are barred and anything is possible. The only criterion was that the work had to fit a 25 square metre space. Read more…

The Business of Jumping S-Curves

Welcome to the first in a series of posts in which I’ll look at what makes companies genuine high-performance businesses, and discuss why so many fail to make the grade. Are enduringly successful companies simply in the right place at the right time? Can it really just be a matter of luck or is there more to it than that? Accenture has explored this topic in detail over the years, and we’ve identified a number of traits that we believe distinguish the winners from the also-rans of the business world.

So how do a select group of companies outperform their peers over a sustained period? And how do they manage to consistently grow both revenues and profitability, even during economic downturns and market disruptions? Is it down to the business ‘excellence’ that was the focus of so much business literature in the latter part of the 20th century, or is it the ‘greatness’ that everybody was talking about in the early part of the last decade? In 2003, Accenture embarked on a major research project to find out what really sets these companies apart. Over the past eight years, we have looked at over 800 companies across dozens of industries and going back decades. What we found is that truly great companies get to the top and stay there by accomplishing the one thing that evades the majority of companies: they jump the S-Curve of business performance.
