Accenture’s yearly High Performance IT research for this year’s program, involved the assessment by the most senior IT executives in 226 of the world’s largest private- and public-sector organizations.

In an interview with Accenture Netherlands director technology, Bas Telgenkamp, the results were summed up. “Our research inidicates that CIOs of High Performance IT organizations are involved directly with the business output and that they tune their activitites to the current and future business demands of the entire organization. They have succesfully phased out their legacy systems and are embracing new technologies. The push for the right balance between cost optimalization and budget availability, knowledge and resources is an important condition for growth.” For more on the High Performance IT research study, have a look at the video below:

Cloud Computing Alphabet Soup: I for Integration

Blog post written by Bas van Hengstum. Bas is a former blogger on Blogpodium and is an Integration Architect at Accenture Netherlands with a great interest for Cloud Computing.

http://www.redkid.net/generator/soup/sign.phpCloud Computing enjoys an increasing popularity, and more types of services arise in the Cloud. Traditionally there was a relatively short list of Cloud services consisting of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (Paas) and Software (or: Application) as a Service (Saas). Nowadays we start running out of acronyms, as services such as Process as a Service (PRaaS), Storage as a Service (also SaaS), Integration as a Service (also IaaS) and Enterprise Service Bus as a Service (ESBaaS) have been added. This trend of having every thinkable service in the Cloud has even evolved into Everything as a Service (EaaS, XaaS or *aaS).

With my background in Integration Architecture, I wrote this article to provide insight in the world of Integration as a Service and to introduce an Integration-as-a-Service Offerings Model.

The CMO-CIO Alignment Imperative

Digital is driving fundamental shifts in how businesses operate. Instead of a handful of online and offline touch points, companies have the opportunity to meet customers anywhere and everywhere: in social media sites, inside their smart phones and on their favorite blogs. Since marketers are intruding in domains that are much more reflective of the personal interests of their targets, earning and maintaining the right to visibility on these channels requires a new and extraordinary level of content that reflects the wants and needs of the consumer. In other words: Messages need to be relevant. That requires eschewing traditional “push marketing” and instead offering information that is engaging and timely to individual consumers based on their specific interests.

Security: Good Intentions are not enough

Image adapted from Jon McGovern on Flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonmcgovern/2673202881/)

Recently, I had the pleasure to be involved in a large survey regarding the treatment of privacy and data protection by international organizations. The opinion of a lot of consumers around the world was also taken into account in the survey, which resulted in an interesting mix of views and opinions. One of the most surprising outcomes of the survey to me was that particularly the well organized countries like the Netherlands, Belgium but also the US had a relatively high score with regards to having lost privacy sensitive data.

On average about 58% of organizations around the world admitted to having lost customer data. But in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands and the US the percentage was above 70 which is surprisingly high if you take into account that many of these organizations say that privacy is important to them and that they feel that they have a good security regime to safeguard the protection of their critical data. About 80% of companies in these countries say that they feel that they have adequate security measures. So apparently there is a mismatch between intent and actions. Clearly, good intentions are not enough!

Innovation in the Cloud

Everyone is talking about the Cloud. And reducing cost is one of the most hailed advantages of migrating to the cloud. Infra and software clouds do offer the sharing of commodities which provides these advantages. But Cloud computing and SaaS do also enable innovative and differencing solutions within organizations with cloud platforms . These advantages are discussed at Innovate IT 2010 conference where ‘Creating innovation in the Cloud’ is the main theme. International keynote speakers from Accenture and other leading cloud system integrators and suppliers  will provide an usefull update concerning the latest trends and challenges on the cloud, and will discuss the value of Cloud to Innovate in IT.  I hope to see you there!

Cloud Computing versus Security and Privacy: Dark Clouds?

(C) 2009, O'Reilly Media (ISBN: 0596802765)Cloud Computing is hot: “Cloud Computing heralds an evolution of business that is no less influential than e-business”.
It might sound very simple: Instead of maintaining your own applications, platforms and servers, you obtain them as a service from outside your own organization, so you don’t have to care about maintenance, performance, scalability, software upgrades and uptime anymore. But is that all?

No, there’s more. According to a recently published research (see this survey and risk assessment) by the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), Confidentiality of corporate data and Privacy are the number 1 and 2 main concerns (and showstoppers) for companies who are on a journey of implementing Cloud Computing.
This article addresses Cloud Computing from a Security and Privacy perspective and introduces a four step approach to overcome cold feed for Cloud Computing.

Mobile internet brought to you by apps

Blog post written by Coert van den Thillaart. Richard is a former blogger on Blogpodium and is since 2004 active in the middleware area (EAI, SOA, EDA etc.) at Accenture Netherlands.

For my first blog I would like to write about the mobile internet. To make things clear, with mobile internet I mean accessing the internet on mobile devices like phones and PDA’s. I don’t mean getting access to the internet on your net- or notebook on the move.

Mobile internet is finally breaking through and is currently seen as an important market. But how come this hasn’t happened sooner? After all, the mobile internet is almost as old as the normal internet. We have been able to access the internet through our phones since around 1998 with WAP. However it hasn’t really been a great success. So what has changed making it so popular at the moment. Read more…

I got the Nexus One

nexus-one.jpgI got the Nexus One, the new Google Android phone. And it works great. Obviously, as a tech-savvy person, I am always interested in the latest technology gadgets and the Nexus One did for sure not disillusion me.

It is not the small gadgets that impressed me most but the melting together of the web and daily life. For instance, Layar (a bit dated now) which is available both on the iphone and Android is an impressive augmented reality application allowing to see the world with an extra information layar. And then you have Google Goggles (which is Android only) that allows you to visually search several items such as photos of books, business cards, artwork, places, logos and landmarks with your camera. It is close to my earlier vision where image will be a strong user interaction channel, more than text-input.

I reported a while ago that Accenture Technology Labs went even further Read more…
