Nice story, Angela! Unfortunately there are still too many companies that take the loyalty of their customers for granted. I hope Roy's story at the High Performance Marketing Conference 2012 will transfer his vision to other attendees.

Dear Bert,

I agree, the next is indeed getting more out of the existing data and bring it to value information. However, a large legacy system landscape is out there (prox. 20 year old) and need desperate replacement. All companies would like to use latest technology (like wireless) due to the fact that why would buy old stuff and being prepared for the future.
Like to continue our discussion.

Regards, Anjo

Dear Anjo,

Very constructive blog post. I agree with your vision "IT will take over", however I think there's an important aspect missing.

You point out that wireless is the next step and I think there will be an evolution before that. I try to explain. DCS vendors indeed evolved from a hardware mindset towards a more application focussed mindset. This change of strategy had its clear consequences. Every operational bottleneck during the last decades was solved with the introduction of yet another isolated information system. Some examples: LIMS, ERP, PIMS (historians), Alarm Management software,… The result: the presence of mind boggling quantities of data. Some striking numbers: only 5% of this raw data becomes converted into workable information, only 10% is relational structured and more than 50% of the data has poor data quality…

MES (manufacturing execution systems) meant (or means) a big step forward in process industry however solely connecting databases is not sufficient to turn data into knowledge. To really capitalize on the massive amounts of data, in other words, to become analytically competitive, companies need to think about their information strategy. And from my opinion companies are facing a difficult time converting their incoming data into valuable and usable knowledge due to existing standards and present tools nobody wants to replace (change management).

In my opinion the information strategy should focus more on information, instead of on technology, hereby turning their iT investments - with a lower case i - into IT investments - with a capital I. It's indicated by sources such as IDC that using predictive technologies doubles the ROI of business intelligence projects/implementations.

A modern information strategy is concentrated on 4 I's: Information, Integration, Innovation and Intelligence. Companies that use their data smartly, will be able to present a true competitive edge!

To summarize, I think before plants start collecting even more date coming from 'wireless sensors' they first need an information centric mindset corresponding with a spot-on information strategy.

Your feedback is always welcome! It's nice debating on this topic.

Best Regards,
Bert Baeck

I absolutely agree that companies shouldn't only focus on cost reduction side of outsourcing. Because outsourcing allows companies to focus on core competencies, then these competencies should be developed further.

As products become more complex, if simpler in customer experience, innovation must increasingly address the "whole product", such that services, operational capabilities, human skills, and business models, must all converge in a holistic mode of innovation. iPod and iTunes, product and business model, are only the most obvious example.
